ONLINE Masterclass with Sienna Dahlen

" Exploring Sarah Vaughan's Version of Doodlin' "

Join Sienna Dahlen in this special online Performative Masterclass open to vocalists and instrumentalists

Saturday, April 15, 2023 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm

This performative masterclass is open to instrumentalists and vocalists everywhere because it is ONLINE! The session will begin with an examination of Sarah Vaughan’s approach to groove and phrasing, her interpretation of the lyric and the effect of her personality on the music. We will then move on to some playing, and interpret and reproduce the discussed elements vocally and instrumentally. A focus on story-telling and stylistic development on extended forms (jazz études) will be the natural result of such explorations.

Topics include:
* embodying the Blues in an extended story form *
* interpretation of lyrics via the voice and external instruments *
* use of techniques such as straight eighths in a swing tune, back phrasing, forward phrasing, full range melodic paraphrasing *

Juno-award winning vocalist, Sienna Dahlen was born in the pristine Kootenays and raised in the gusty, dusty Peace River region of northern British Columbia. Her upbringing and influences whir like vintage jukebox singles, rooted in everything from the Beatles to Joni Mitchell to Bill Frisell. Passionately paving her own path, Dahlen’s music and sound scale the outskirts of folk and jazz while sometimes spanning the spatial avant-garde, all the while showering her listeners with a rhapsody of sonic love.
