“After I retired from my day job, music became my passion. About ten years ago, I was welcomed as a complete novice to JazzWorks. My first camp in 2017 was exhausting and exhilarating (still is!). I have written a few jazzy songs, including “Don’t Algorithm Me.” I love Anita O’Day for her cheekiness and Chet Baker for his longing.”

“I often say that I am an artist stuck in the body of a PhD economist. Nowadays, I spend as much of my free time as I can pursuing artistic endeavours. I am a visual artist, a textile crafter and designer and a musician. In music, jazz has been my first love since childhood. I have played saxophone and flute in the past, and have developed my singing over the last decade or so. I have also become acquainted with Brazilian, Cuban and African percussions. As an adult learner, these days, I work on music theory, solfège, piano and trumpet, while still perfecting my singing. I sing in French, English, Spanish and Portuguese, and I love to fill my repertoire with beautiful, interesting, yet lesser-known and at times quirky, songs."

“My first instrument was guitar when I was 12. I then studied flute through high school. I played my first professional gig as a bassist with The Shades, a pop/punk band, in 1978 when I was 20. After 40 years, six genres and as many bands, my focus now lies with jazz, leading The Huge Groove Trio while working with a variety of singers and players.”

“I am an active physiotherapist who loves running, biking, hiking and just being outdoors in nature.  While I have always loved music, I never sang or played an instrument until the last decade.  My singing journey started about 10 years ago in 2015 when my guitar lessons were not going so well (I didn’t practice).  My guitar instructor also taught voice so I asked if she could give me vocal lessons.  After testing my voice, she agreed to teach me.  I took some lessons and then joined my church choir, which required me to sing 4 hours a week and provided great instruction.  My vocal range expanded and I started singing some solos in church and some open mics at Irene’s Pub.  I like many genres of music: pop, folk, R&B, jazz and gospel.  My Mom, a long-time Jazz Festival volunteer, introduced me to jazz music in my early twenties. My partner, an excellent jazz bass player, has expanded my knowledge of the jazz genre and introduced me to various jazz musicians.  Some of my favourites include Antonio Carlos Jobim, Bill Evans, Pat Metheny and Jerome Kern. With his encouragement, I started singing jazz and attending the jazz Vocal Open Mic workshops a few years ago. I have learned a great deal from the workshops and I am thoroughly enjoying my singing journey.   My vocal teacher is encouraging me to hire some musicians and have my own set; so, that’s my next project!”

“I studied piano, guitar, and sang in church choirs as a child. In grade 11, I started playing trombone and later performed in chamber and pit orchestras and various groups until graduating with a BMus from the University of Ottawa in 1989. After an extended break, I began participating in community bands, choirs and musicals, and I currently lead music at the Anglican church in Winchester. I studied jazz with Keith Hartshorn-Walton and voice with Margaret Whisselle. In 2024, I attended the JazzWorks Canada Jazz Camp and found my people.”

“I am a visual artist and a recently retired art teacher from Toronto. I have been singing all my life, but specifically jazz for the past 12 years. My musical background includes guitar lessons, being part of a choir, writing songs, volunteering for a concert series for 15 years and performing at weekly song circle gatherings. I have performed at open mics in Toronto at GNO’s “Girl’s Night Out,” with a live jazz band and in Sydney, Australia at several clubs throughout the city.  I have begun taking piano lessons, something I have wanted to do since I was a child.  I love all genres of music, but jazz is my favourite. “Jazz is happy music, it makes people happy – and makes me happy when I sing it.” Jazz is my passion, and I intend to devote my next chapter to singing jazz.  I am very excited to be part of the vibrant JazzWorks community here in Ottawa.”

“Singing and music have always brought me immense joy. I started singing pop music at a young age and eventually developed an interest in choral and classical music. As a singer, I have had the opportunity to perform and compete on different stages and venues. As a chorister, I have sung some memorable contemporary and classical compositions which include Mozart's Requiem and Beethoven's 9th symphony. Nonetheless, jazz is my absolute favorite! I fell in love with jazz listening to Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. I love the intricacy, spontaneity, as well as the sentiments that jazz music evokes. Being fairly new to Ottawa, I am delighted and thankful to have found JazzWorks. It's wonderful to have a welcoming and friendly community for new jazz singers like myself. Meeting and exchanging with other musicians from different backgrounds has been such an enriching experience. I look forward to learning and discovering more from these events.”

“Raised in Ottawa, I grew up around music, playing guitar and singing with friends. As an adult, I studied history, received a PhD from Queen’s University and spent most of my career as a historian with the National Historic Sites division of Parks Canada. I have returned to my first love of music in retirement, taking voice lessons and singing in choirs and with JazzWorks.”
