JazzWorks "Originals" Concert
Held Sunday May 25, 2014 Richcraft Theatre at the Shenkman Centre in Orleans
The Originals concert, held at the Shenkman Centre, came out of a JazzWorks project that has been going on for several years, most intensely in the last two, with the creation of extra days at jazz camp for composers. The Ontario Arts Council has given support. I think all will agree, the concert was a success, and a wonderful jazz experience for participants and audience alike.
Here are some photos from the concert. Read more in Charley's blog, The Tune Up...
First Jerry Heath scholarship winner makes a great impression
Colin with Charley Gordon, Jerry's long-time musical associate
Young trombone player Colin Lloyd is the first winner of the scholarship established in the name of Jerry Heath, an inspiring contributor to the JazzWorks jazz camp for 10 years. Like Jerry, Colin has a deep sense of the jazz tradition, even though he is only 18. He impressed everyone who heard him at this year's camp with his strong playing and eagerness to soak up jazz knowledge from faculty members and other players.
Colin is a graduate of Earl of March high school in Kanata. In the fall he is heading to McGill University to enter the jazz program. He promises to keep up his JazzWorks connections. That might involve turning up a Carleton Tavern jam session during a school break. Don't miss the opportunity to hear him.
