The JazzWorks Mentored Jams are designed to help inexperienced 'jammers' feel more comfortable in the impromptu jam environment, and to help musicians overall play together more effectively.
Participants come from a variety of backgrounds: vocal students, big band musicians, young, emerging musicians, and even more experienced musicians who are interested in learning more from the skilled mentors coaching each session.
To date in the fall 2015 season we have enjoyed the coaching skills of local jazz artists Garry Elliot, Rob Frayne and Rachel Beausoleil. Each artist/mentor brings a special 'take' on playing jazz in a combo.
Rachel Beausoleil, an Ottawa-based vocalist, offered a focus on vocalists on December 6 at the JazzWorks Mentored Sunday Jam. The session stressed paying behind the vocalist, "If the players practice listening they will be able to do it better each time."
Our next Sunday Jam will be January 10, with mentor Tim Bedner. Guitarist Tim Bedner is a modern lyrical composer and improviser, and an award-winning teacher and performer. Reviewers have called him “a talent and a force, playing with grace, style, passion, and inventiveness.” His CD recording “Of Light and Shadow” debuted in the #1 spot of the CMJ jazz chart.
This is a session you will not want to miss!
