JazzWorks is pleased to announce our new project, the JazzWorks Combo Mentorship Program, under which JazzWorks faculty members will be available to offer advice to local jazz combos.
It works this way: For a fee, split between the combo and JazzWorks, a JazzWorks faculty member, will attend your rehearsal and give pointers.
Says JazzWorks artistic director John Geggie, “Every year, new combos are formed coming out of jazz camp. Some of them might not know exactly how to proceed. Or a combo that has worked together can find itself in a rut. In those situations constructive advice from a skilled professional can help the group move ahead.”
Geggie has lined up a great team of Ottawa musicians who will be available to help:
Guitarist Roddy Ellias
Guitarist Garry Elliott
Pianist and trombonist Mark Ferguson
Pianist Steve Boudreau
Saxophonist/arranger Rob Frayne
And, of course, bassist John Geggie
We are also investigating the possibility of taking advantage of the presence of Toronto and Montreal faculty members when they are in Ottawa.
Some of the topics that could be dealt with include:
set lists and bandstand strategy;
Or maybe your combo doesn’t sound just right and you want to know why.

What you do then is contact JazzWorks administrator Anna Frlan at email@example.com or (613) 523-0316, give the date and place of your rehearsal and specify which faculty member you would like to help you. The total fee, which goes entirely to the faculty member, is $110 but you pay only half of that if a member of your group is a Friend of JazzWorks or if your group is made up of high school students.
JazzWorks gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Community
Foundation of Ottawa for the Jazz Combo Mentorship project.
