What is ‘the Bulletin Board’?
By Chris Thompson
The Bulletin Board is a page on the new JazzWorks website (www.jazzworkscanada.com/bulletin-board <http://www.jazzworkscanada.com/bulletin-board> ) which is like the classified ad section of a newspaper. It contains postings by people with an instrument to sell, wanting to join a band, etc.
Where did the idea come from?
A couple of months ago a friend of mine (Bill Neil) asked me if I knew of any small jazz groups in south end of the city looking for a sax player. I told him that, although I know many jazz musicians through JazzWorks, I had no idea if any of them were in small jazz groups looking for a sax player. It occurred to me that, since JazzWorks is a ‘community of interest’ of Ottawa jazz musicians and afficionados of live jazz, it would make sense to be able to post this kind of thing on the JazzWorks website. My suggestion was adopted, and I was asked to design, implement, and administer the Bulletin Board. I feel that people who suggest things should be willing to put some time and effort into making them happen – if they aren’t, why should anyone else? – so I agreed. Mary designed the cute graphic and the posting submission web form.
What kind of ‘postings’ are on the Bulletin Board?
There are currently six categories – For Sale, Want To Buy, Musician Looking For Band, Band Looking For Musician, Musician Wants to Form Band/Jam, and Other.
How do I post on the Bulletin Board?
Fill in the ‘Submit a Posting’ web form at the top of the Bulletin Board page and click on ‘Submit’. The submission is sent to me as an email. I check the posting for appropriateness, completeness, and clarity and, if appropriate, add it to the Bulletin Board page under the relevant category.
What postings are appropriate/inappropriate?
Postings must be JazzWorks-related, in other words directly related to promoting live jazz in Ottawa. An example of an appropriate posting – I have a sax for sale. An example of an inappropriate posting – I have a car to sell. Events are not posted on the Bulletin Board and should continue to be submitted to ottawajazzhappenings.
How do people reply to postings?
Like the classified ad section of a newspaper, replies to postings are via email or phone and are external to the Bulletin Board. The Bulletin Board is NOT a forum. Mary and I are both believers in the KIS rule – keep it simple!
How long do postings stay on the Bulletin Board?
I assign each new posting an expiry date one month from when I post it. On the expiry date I remove the posting. People can re-post if they wish. This keeps the Bulletin Board from being cluttered with old postings.
I have a posting I’d like to submit. Who can use the Bulletin Board?
Until May 31st, anyone can submit a posting and access the postings. After May 31st, you must be a JazzWorks member to submit a posting.
